Two new Trebro AutoStack II sod harvesters are working the turf fields at Super-Sod’s Middle Georgiafarm in Ft. Valley. The company decided to invest the $400,000 each as part of their ongoing quest to constantly improve sod quality and workplace safety.

The AutoStack II improves end-product quality in two ways. It makes a more uniform cut that creates a tidier appearance to a sod roll and it cuts wider rolls. The rolls are now cut at 24” wide when they were previously cut at 16” wide. Wider rolls mean less seams in a new lawn and less seams mean less gaps for weeds to find purchase. A reduced number of seams in a freshly installed lawn also means reduced potential for desiccation along the edges. The quality of cut and size of the roll harvested by the AutoStack II render better health and finish to freshly laid sod.

Not only is sod quality improved, but harvesting conditions for personnel are improved. With the AutoStack II, automation is fully automatic, requiring only the driver to operate the harvester/stacker and eliminating the need for an additional two people in the fatiguing position of manually stacking harvested rolls. Conditions for the operator are superior with a climate-controlled cab and anti-vibration mounts for an easier ride. The operator also enjoys ergonomic positioning of the controls near the seat and curved glass windshields, front and back, for excellent visibility of the sod harvesting and stacking.

Super-Sod vice president Ben Copeland Jr. is pleased with their investment in the automated harvesters saying that on top of the improved quality and safety benefits, they’re getting a more uniform cut in a faster amount of time.

Super-Sod has 5 farms and 11 Outlets throughout Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and north Florida. The new Trebro harvesters are at their Middle Georgia farm. Super-Sod is a family-run business that employs experts in turf and horticulture.
